my mk1 reshell project
thought i would pull my finger out and do my post again as some of you may rememeber the turbo was stood for over ten years outside so was in a bit of a state a few pics before i got the car
after they were delivered decided to wash the turbo before i started work on it
both cars got the 45 of the same bloke and he delivered them both for me the 45 was garaged for 20 years before he got it then was left outside for a short while so is not to bad still a bit of rust but as you know trying to find one with no rust at all is quite hard now
the 45
day one started to strip the 45 down to see what i had to work with
some of the rust i found
started cleaning the rust up spraying and a bit of welding
temperorly sprayed the bare metal till the rest of the car get sprayed and as im having to work outside and it wasnt the right wheather to do the externall bodywork i started to strip the turbo
as the turbo shell was to rusty to safely jack up and it was just being scraped and i needed to get the bits of from underneath and the engine out i finished striping the interior and did this
then i just lifted the front end of the engine and put the bits in the back of me mates van and took to the scrap yard
then as it was to cold to do anymore body work i started to clean the parts so once i done the shell when its warmer i could start putting it back together as soon as poss started by soldering the twisted together wires in the loom and heat shrinking
cleaned up the intercooler some pics before
after i came across some alloy cleaner at machine mart thought i would give it a try not bad stuff for a fiver
cleaned up the ecu and afm before
after
cleaned up the coil forgot to take a before pic but was same sort of condition as the afm and ecu
cleaned striped and refurbed the alternator here before
after
and the starter motor also forgot to take a before pic of this but same condition as alternator and can be seen in pics of engine
cleaned clutch cable and sprayed the brackets before
after a good clean and spray
started painting a few other bits some before pics
after lots of cleaning rust treating and several coats of paint
painted a few other bits arb brackets
other bits
started changing seat covers over drivers seat with passenger cover changed the metal seat plate that was rusted through from a spare seat cleaned up sprayed the frame repaired the cover put back together was a fun job
cleaned up treated and re done the stone chip on petrol tank
overpainted
and started to refurb the wheels several coats of paint on them and some deep scratches that where hiden by the many layers of paint
one down three to go

Re: my mk1 reshell project
That alloy cleaner is very impressive too, will have to invest in some of that I reckon.
As for the punto still on the hunt for a 2ltr engine to replace the pile shit I bought previously.

Re: my mk1 reshell project
vern the alloy cleaner did take several applications to get it that good but the intercooler was heavily oxidized might of been why but i wouldnt recomend soaking things in it as it says you can the bit i tried soaking in it turned slightly greyish it dont give instant results but for a fiver its good stuff

Re: my mk1 reshell project
been doing on a bit more on refurbing my wheels but wondering whats every ones opinion on mk1 wheels lacquered or not im thinking no lacquer but that mean regular polishing but with lacquer it tends to crack or peel let in water and cause them to corrode

Re: my mk1 reshell project
yeah less polishing work but when the lacquer eventully cracks or peels as it allways seems to on wheels they end up looking a mess when they corrode and have to sand the lacquer of to clean them up properly so im still in two minds what to do iy depend how long the lacquer will last

Re: my mk1 reshell project
a wouldny lacker them ul have them striped back down in no time the lacker will cip nd wreck the polished look so ad keep them polished wats 10 15 mins a week with a shammy to keep them nice and u get an acid cleaner that u spray onto the alloys and rinse off after a few mins and i must say it works great and saves alot off messing about those time consuming we gaps in the wheels
