Uno Turbo Project Empty Uno Turbo Project

Post by rod_dude Tue Sep 03, 2013 7:32 pm

To be honest I feel like a right fake on here - there really not much to do compared to some of the projects that you guys seem to have undertaken. Anyway - Ive just joined, and my midlife crisis to get back to my youth has struck, so I bought one as bog standard as I could so that its (slightly) less likely to have been caned to within a thou of its life. Anyway here is my initial list of jobs

  • Remove old immobiliser
  • Fit new immobiliser for insurance
  • Replace Ill fitting front bumper
  • Fit and wire Front Fog lamps
  • Binding Front Near side brake caliper (fixed)
  • 3 Slow punctures (fixed)
  • 1 hunchback of notredamme tyre (fixed)
  • Terrible idle speed (fixed)
  • Sticky Throttle cable
  • Boost gauge not working (fixed)
  • Passenger seat doesn't move
  • Rear squirter doesnt work
  • Ridiculous back box on the exhaust
  • Boot lid mechanism broke so remote pull doesnt work.
  • Passenger door and boot lid locks no key
  • Sticky Clutch cable
  • Drivers door dropped hinge.
  • Bonnet rusting on inside - suspect a new bonnet with a respray will be needed
  • Good service
  • rear seat needs sorting
  • Refurbish the original steering wheel
  • Replace the stupid Momo Steering wheel size of 10p piece with original
  • Look at sloppy gear linkages
  • Rear door cards need replacing

A couple of things that I have noticed on this Uno. There seems to be more room under the bonnet than I remember. I seemed to recall through nosta that you could drop things into the engine bay and never see them again.

Anyway -I will post some pictures when I take some:)

The only "hidden" horror is that it runs like a 2-stroke, ie plenty of oil. The guy following me on the way back down from Scotland (in my car) had a screen full of oil by the time we got back to Bolton.

On subsequent drives it doesnt actually seem as bad on the oil consumption. I'll have to keep checking.

The boot lid remote release mechanism broke after 1 day, which cheesed me off as it was working when I bought it. Though I have to say the break just looks like metal fatigue that you just cant predict.

Other than that its looking good.

The real nice thing is that they seem to have been more popular than I remembered because, load of people are pulling up next to me when Im in it, saying how much they loved them. Which is strange since most of the people of that time seemed to have been in XR2's XR3i's etc

Some photos

Firstly as a number of people spotted it does have the front and rear bumpers from a Mk2 Uno turbo, they are slightly ill fitting which will ultimately get on my nerves. The question is whether I should go back to the Mk1 bumpers (I have found one) and fit the front fog lamps for Mk1 or suck it up and live with it and fir the Mk2 fog lamps. I have to say I do prefer the cleaner front fogs of the Mk2, but then its not going to be 100% Mk1 which will again bug me. Any suggestions welcome:)

I noticed more room under the bonnet and I think the airbox used to be over towards the left of the engine bay. The K&N Filter has done away with that... which is nice.

Below is the broken boot mech, you can just see another hairline fatigue fracture on the picture on the hook thats meant to go much further down.

Mk1 bumper on a mk1. It will always look 'wrong' if you fit the mk2 bumper, plus as the mk1 is chunkier looking at the front than a mk2, the mk1 bumper adds to the chunkiness. Don't mess with evolution!

I agree with Chas on the bumper, plus it breathes better with the standard airbox, and I would be ripping out that bulkhead heat shield before it goes on fire.

Mark Perry (markp38) lives in Bolton and may still have some Mk1 parts.

You have a really nice MK1 in a nice colour added to which its an Anti Skid! As previously said, it needs the MK1 bumper and then just leave it alone:)

Just to show I take advice, I am going to put the right bumper on. I was conflicted about the nicer front fogs on the mk2, but you're all right, don't mess with evolution.

Car looks really nice, it really does need a mk1 bumper on it, I have a decent bonnet, boot latch and plenty of other bits if you need anything
