Decent spec mk2 engine Empty Decent spec mk2 engine

Post by richvans Thu Nov 21, 2013 9:14 am

Head gasket has gone on my Uno after a thrashing at Brandshatch! was getting 1.04sec laps with a shagged engine, winter engine rebuild required, typical just got it through the MOT, new tank, fuel lines, brakelines, mk3 golf brakes, proportioning valve, bearings etc!

So considering upgrading to a better spec engine if anyone is breaking a car etc, i know i've missed a few decent engines over the summer..

Also might consider buying parts, head, forged bottom end etc

Yeah cheers for links

Would consider a Punto GT engine, i do look on the punto sports website, what i could do with is one someones spent alot on rebuilding with uprated parts

I do have a x19 1500 bottom end and could do build a 1600 turbo engine but i know i'd end up spending thousands!
I just want a bullit proof engine for trackdays

Here's where i'm at so far!

Last year i bought a brand new in a crate mk2 engine off ebay, its mint i was going to stick this in the Uno when i killed the old one!

I also rebuilt another one fairly standard but had uprated piper cam - cheers Vern, but this was going in my X19 (a long slow project mainly due to me messing about with the Uno lol)

After getting hooked on track days i now want to stick something in it with a fair bit more grunt than a standard engine

That sparkyjay1211 engine got me thinking as i could prob get my money back on the mint in a crate one and use the money to buy something more suitable for a modified Uno

After chatting to some punto modifiers i'm consider a 1.6 stroker (1.9 might not be revy enough for a track car) using a Uno or Gt Head, bigger turbo etc

But still open to other ideas, Unograle i'll pm ya cheers

If i was going to build another engine I would prob use a 1600 punto sporting block as they have the under piston oil squirters, along with some wossner forged pistons and mk1 1.3 rods, mk1 cylinder head and a piper cam,

Thinking the same but with Mk2 parts as i have them to hand, any reason why you would use Mk1 head / rods?

The problem with the 1600 sporting block is its open deck like the Mk2 UT, Punto GT lumps. Where as the X19 and Mk1 blocks are the indestructible closed deck

Charlie i've got a low mileage X19 block, so would be nice to use that as i know you have

But does it involve more work then the punto 1600 sporting block? I'm led to believe with the punto 1600 block you can use the Uno head. Didnt you use a modified X19 head? also what pistons / crank did you use?

I used the Punto/ Mk2 Uno crank, Mk1 rods, X19 head with recessed combustion chambers and turbo valves.
Honestly mate. I have tried my very best to murder that engine, but it just asks for more

Do you have any pics of the head after machining?

Also remind what pistons you used again?

Standard 1600 pistons Rich. I wasn't away to spend good money on something I was trying to blow up.

Good work!

So the pistons are same 87mm, thought you said they were out a nissan 200sx or something?, do these give the extra cc or does the Uno crank stroke give the extra cc

Nice head machining

I did have a set of Celica GT4 pistons in there. But my mate blow his car up and needed his old pistons back. The extra cc's come from the longer stroke

Interesting stuff, so your running the X19 pistons and have machined a recess in the head so they don't hit the valves?

I'd like to build something similar, would make sense to put it in the X19, , but for my track Uno i'm thinking about using the new 1400 crate engine, getting the head ported / gas flowed, new cam turbo etc less variables to go wrong!

Nope, 1600 Punto pistons. You have to chop about 3 mm off the top of the X19 pistons lol..
The combustion chambers got machined out to lower the compression ratio

Frankensteins engine!

Is the closed deck design more resistant to head gasket failure?

Pistons out of a sporting? are they upto the compression?!

Personally I have never had a head gasket go in all the years I have had Mk1's, but you hear plenty story's of Mk2's blowing or rotting out the block. Just looking at the pictures tells you which one's strongest I think?

Pistons are good for 250bhp I believe?

In what way is it killing the gaskets?
Its a possibility that its det doing it and its running lean, or if still on the stock intercooler and on track the inlet temp maybe getting to high also adding to the problem.

Mate i think my head gasket has been on the way out for a while, its been using water, but no sign of mustard until the last trackday and this was coming out the breather / catch tank!

Its well due a rebuild, i've had it 2 years and bought another brand new mk2 engine in crate over a year ago

It was fine at Goodwood in 30degrees where i even had the brakefluid boiling!

Just pondering whether to use the new stock mk2 engine i have or build something with more power, i'm thinking now to use the new engine but tweak it with a new cam and some porting which will prob make the most reliable engine

ps its got a fmic and fuel pressure regulator so shouldnt be running lean

Argh may have just been unlucky then,if it shows any signs of indentation or crushing on the fire rings like this http://www.reinz.de/pictures/39-00132-10_PI_3_SM-CHG-low-e.pdf or the piccy of my head gasket in my thread then you have a pre igniton or det problem.

Decent spec mk2 engine Kdet_zpsc3bc2758

Yours sounds more like a simple blow though, but it can be hard to tell if its the above if the blow has destroyed the gasket.
That's assuming it had blown there and the water was leaking into a bore and not water to oil way which is pretty rare?

Not sure on engine choice mate, but I am with Charlie that if I was building one for a track car I would want to use a closed deck block.
Also it may of already been mentioned but I think the mk1 rods are forged where as I don't think the mk2 are?
