Re: Mk1 Minter
OK, as Steve has requested an update...
Since getting her running I've cracked on with the remaining jobs, starting with painting the bonnet scoop/grill:
Before:
After:
Fitted:
I then noticed the rather faded/grey screen-wash bottle so that had the same treatment:
Before & ready to paint:
After:
Fitted:
To set the rear brake bias valve I needed a 55kg weight in the boot...and a 15 year old daughter holding 2 x 2.5kg weights was just right:
11kgs hanging off the lever:
Sorted

Re: Mk1 Minter
After much deliberation I decided to have the seats re-covered in the brand new OE covers that came with the car. Didn't attempt it myself though, I left it to a local upholsterer (Evans' in Whittlesey) to do a pro job on! Watching him open the packets for the OE covers wasn't entirely comfortable...I also asked him to repair any collapsed or split foam plus pack the squabs and bolsters with as much extra foam as possible so as to offer a little more support when sitting in them.
Passenger side done:
I tidied up the lower sections of the frame as they were pretty grotty and had a fair amount of surface corrosion on (rubbed down, zinc-primed & topped with satin black):
Installed in car:
The driver's side took a little longer to do as the upholsterer needed to get the broken frame welded/repaired by his neighbour when he wasn't working nights (frame had snapped in 2 places near where the headrest mounts). Once I had it back it had the same treatment to the lower frame.
Installed:
I decided to have some show-plates made:
So that they are interchangeable with the normal road-plates I had some sheets of ferritic stainless steel cut to 500mm x 100mm to screw to the front bumper and tailgate to act as backing plates. The number plates themselves will be held on with strip-magnets.
Backing plate, front, fitted:
Rear:
Show-plates attached (sorry about the poor photos, not sure what went wrong?!)

Re: Mk1 Minter
Onto the wheels...
I acquired a set of 14" Croma Turbo wheels a while ago but they were in poor cosmetic condition, so I took them to Pristine near Milton Keynes. They stripped, painted (in gunmetal grey) all over, diamond cut the front faces then lacquered the wheels all over. Cost a few quid but well worth it I think you'll agree!
As collected:
Oooh, what's inside...
Sweet!
All 4:
Plenty of griiiiip:
Tyres fitted:
New centre caps:
Wheels were polished, waxed and sealed inside and out, centre caps fitted and the tyre side-walls treated with Megs tyre gel.
One wheel fitted (with new anti-rust bolts):
A rear:
Looking rather good even if I do say so myself!

Re: Mk1 Minter
Prior to fitting the roof lining I applied a little Fat-Mat sound-deadening to the underside of the roof to stop any 'drumming':
Forgot to take a pic of the roof lining fitted!
How she looks now:
She's booked in for MOT tomorrow morning, wish me luck!

Won't be using her much, just sunny weekends through the summer. I'm at the MOT place now and the guy has just taken her in...

Re: Mk1 Minter
You were correct Dunc - passed with no advisories I am one happy chappy! Will tax her on Monday/Tuesday then I'm on the road
The drive there was nerve-wracking to say the least and I've never stared at gauges so intently but all seemed OK and the drive home was considerbly more relaxed! Car feels good - tight, no rattles and rides bumps well. I guess the tyres need a little time to wear in + the tracking needs doing but the steering doesn't feel as direct as I'd expect (not as direct as my Coupé at least). Pulled a little boost in 3rd on the way home and it was fine.
A whopping 18 miles on the clock now!

BRILLIANT! Honestly mate, im well jealous! Stunning car, definatly one of my fav mk1s.
The feeling of driving it back with a fresh MOT must be awesome! As soon as its taxed, you will feel even more relaxed driving it about being moted, taxed and insured.

Re: Mk1 Minter
car looks quality, wheels look really nice in 14", what did you use to paint the washer bottle?

Thanks The 14's were definitely worth hunting down and having refurbished, 13's never looked right on my original UT.
Washer bottle was plastic primed, grey primed then topped with a couple of coats of satin black.

Thanks Dunc It's a HUGE relief to have jumped the MOT hurdle.
Insurance wise she's covered fully comprehensive by Footman James on a 'classic' car policy with limited mileage and agreed value. £146 for 12 months with European breakdown cover included seemed pretty cheap to me considering all my NCB is used up on my Coupé's policy so the Uno's price is without any discount

Thanks!
I did have to chuckle when one of the mechanics at the MOT place described her as merely "alright" condition wise...clearly a hard man to impress!

Re: Mk1 Minter
Taxed her this morning at my local PO so she's fully road legal and I can take her out for a spin, weather permitting
It's an odd feeling - I spent what seems like forever thinking that the day I'd fire her up, yet alone drive her was AGES away and even just a couple of months ago it still seemed like I had masses to get done but since then it's snowballed and all come together in a whirlwind of activity such that I don't think I've had time for it to register fully yet that she's done and I no longer need to daydream about "the day when..."
As a final piece of the puzzle I've been in touch with the guy I bought the car from, he's no doubt delighted with the news that I've finished what he started 17 years ago!

Took the Uno out for a short spin last night as it was dry out...popped over to pick up the current Mrs jas_racing then headed out into the sticks; covered 26 miles...not much but all still running & feeling good and I reached the dizzying heights of 56mph at one point!! Such a hooligan...

Popped over to Big Steve Raider's place last night and he couldn't resist pulling his R5 GTT out of the garage for some side-by-side pics:

What an AWESOME machine..
I wish we had Digital camera's back in the day to show pictures of our identical cars 20 years ago... Back then you had the whole rigmarole of only having 36 exposures and having to get them blummin developed...!
