TURBOCOLLECTIVE The rebuild Empty TURBOCOLLECTIVE The rebuild

Post by Admin Thu Jan 31, 2013 12:58 pm

Basicly this thread is for suggestions and ideas as to what you would like to see included in a new turbocollective forum, to make it bigger and better than ever when it returns.

Any suggestions welcome big or small,so what have you got?

If any of you are still wondering what has happened to TC please read below...

LobsterTC wrote:Hey peeps,

I have been snowed under this last week so have only just had a chance to sit down and try to clear things up a little with what is going on with the TC situation. First of all i think i should start off by saying a massive thankyou to Rich for his work in setting up FUTOC for the meantime while TC is being sorted out, it really is appreciated and i think everyone who frequents TC should be buying him a crate of beers at the next meet up !!

Ok so, onto the unfotunate news of TC and what is now happening. As you are reading this you obviously know that TC is down and has been for around a week now. The reason for this is that the server on which it was held was permenantly deleted by the hosting company due to copyright infringement. The server on which TC was held also held my personal website for my Espai music band, and a mix hosting website for DJ's that Triptech (Simon, a very good personal freind and the main man who has helped me an untold amount over the years with TC for no personal gain) had on there for people to upload their mixes on. By all accounts Sony Music contacted the hosts of the server and reported that there was a copyright infringement on the DJ mixtape website. As such the hosts took it upon themselves to delete the whole server without permission, backing up the data or even contacting us first.

This then brings us onto whether TC was backed up or not. When i left the UK and handed the general running of the website to Paul (unograle) it was all in a bit of a rush and in all honesty, it was a huge amount of information for Paul to take in, once i had left i didnt even really think about TC and the day to day running of it as quite simply i was moving on and wanted to utilize my time to concentrate on other things that i wanted to do with my life and i knew if i was still putting in the hours through the week that i used to with TC it would be detremental to my goals. As such i cant even remember if i showed Paul how to back up the site but i most probably didnt even get round to it. I used to do regular backups but as it has been around 2 and a half years since i last did it i have looked on all of my harddrives and couldnt find anything.

To say i am gutted is a massive understatement, basically it is 10 years of work and of my life down the drain, not only that but it is all of the knowledge and collective effort of every single one of you that has gone and for that is all i can say is that i am truly sorry, in retrospect i should have put into place more stringent steps to make sure the site was backed up but i didn't, there is nothing more i can do or say on that subject now, i do however take full responsibility for it and i will be kicking myself for a long time to come i can assure you all of that...

So what does the future hold ? As it stands and if everybody is willing to show some effort too (with regards to posting and reuploading project and resto threads etc) i will rebuild the site from scratch, there are however upsides to this whole thing, since TC was built i have learnt a hell of alot more about website development, not only on the look, feel and end product, but also on the inner workings of the backend of the site, such as how to set up automated backing up which will be one of the first functions that i will implement. For the meantime FUTOC will be up and running as a temporary stop gap, i will redirect the turbocollective.net address to point old and new members straight here and in the next month or so i will build the new site and get it all running smoothly so the migration over to it will be as painless as possible.

If we could have a thread on here with suggestions for the new site (anything at all) i will correlate your ideas and try to implement anything that is essential and other things that are functional / wanted. TC will be back and it will be bigger and better than ever !!!

Thanks again to Rich and sorry once again to everyone, like i said the ability to look back at mistakes made is an easy thing to do, its frustrating, its gutting, its unfortunate and its inconvenient but i will try to put it right for you all...

TURBOCOLLECTIVE The rebuild Empty Re: TURBOCOLLECTIVE The rebuild

Post by Unograle Thu Jan 31, 2013 1:30 pm

Still trying to get my head around all this. Didn't think anything like this was possible but unfortunately, it's the harsh reality. Running a site like T.C. has it's responsibilities to an extent where yes, it can take a fair portion of your time to keep a close eye on, and much more to keep members happy and help out with any problems they have with the site or the cars themselves.

T.C. is well established and well recognized as THE site for Uno turbos as, all the members from around the world have come to prove. It never ceased to amaze me how far it was reaching, but at the same time getting a view on how things are done in other countries made things interesting.

No point harping on about what's happened as gutting as it is but, we have to look forward to the rebuilding of the new look T.C. All the usual suspects are slowly finding their way onto here through word of mouth, Facebook and emails that have been sent out to notify members of this stop gap that Rich has set up for us all, TOP MAN !

Considering how busy Tom is with his music career commitments, i think it's very noble of him to go the extra mile to get T.C. back on track, so please, support him in his quest to get the legend that is... Turbo Collective, back, and stronger than ever !

Hate to sound cheesy etc but, gotta say it as i see it, for many it's a lifeline that holds together a close nit of like minded car owners, whatever the marque, and not least a sense of belonging, even if some just view it as a forum, it's much more that that.

Easy Paul and Tom!

Fucking hell 10 years! Wow I remember meeting you Tom at Vally Park in Croydon all those years ago!

Anyway, as for the future...........the name needs to remain, it's strength is huge, just check the amount of views after a fresh post was put up. Thats pretty good for single model of car out of production way long ago!

As for structure, this type of layout we are on now I like, it's the same the South African guys use and works well for them.

As for distinction, should we take the opportunity to vote on a new look?

I guess we'd have to vote on that, with all due respect to long standing 'gears if the system' members of course.................I know for a fact I would not be at Uni if I didn't own an Uno Turbo, I owe them and TC at least my best efforts.

I'm thinking maybe we can have a good chat at Brooklands Italian day? some time away i know but I'd enjoy it.

I agree I like this form of layout to me there doesn't appear to be too much wrong with what we have now after the demise of the old forum.

The loss of so much data/info is fucking terrible tbh, can you confirm that due to your mix website that was infringing copy right laws TC was wiped off the back of that then?

So nothing the fault of how TC was run/hosted ect but an outside factor that lead to all our work being wiped?

I think it will take many years to get us back to how we were so the early the better we have the official TC site back up and running the better.

I will be at Brooklands AI this year if anyone wishes to add anything on the way we take TC forward.

I'm currently in the process/market for anothe Uno turbo so this place is a life line for so many.

Long live TC.

Shit guy, guess we better start rebuilding. As for future layout/look, i really liked the old setup, just could have done with a few extra directories: non-car related, ebay only, swaps? stuff like that. Hope we get something permanent soon, and as ive said before, let me know if any donations are needed? Otherwise, see you guys at brooklands?

Now this is real shit news!! I thought it was just down for a couple of days again. Something like this happened to the coupe club some time ago too, but lets not dwell on it.

I have 2 pages saved on my PC from when 2 members fell out over intercoolers and stuff Aug 2009 cos I new they would be deleted instead of been moved to classic threads.

May be useful if everything really has gone to help piece some of the main look and feel of the old site back together without recreating the wheel - couple of logos banners and buttons as gif / png and 2 HTML pages... let me know if you want a copy emailing geek

Haha i cant remember that thread, maybe it was before my time.

Well i will start,i would like to see a gallery setion, think tc may have had one but cant recall if it worked?
This place has got one but its pretty small at around 50 pics i think.

It would be handy for a quick reference to things like maybe sensor locations and stuff like that, could also have a members car section and modifcations and styling section, just to be able to find pics on the same subject quick with out trawling though everyones threads.

I will activate the one on here for a bit,i was trying to think what would be the most handy 50 pics to have as a quick reference to and maybe trim it to single section/subject on here?

The thing that annoyed me the most about the old site was that it never kept me logged in for more than about 5 mins!! Would be good if we could address that some how. Also, how about a recommended supplier section?

could we have stricter moderation, especially on the for sale sections? keeps everything a lot neater and means you know whats what way faster!

i.e. every for sale ad has to have a picture, title has to be descriptive of what it is and it has to include a price

cheers,
Matt

Well, you've heard it hear first, i have chatted to Lobster ( Tom ) and he's set to re-locate back in this country again fairly soon.

Apart from his music career that is bound to flourish with contacts here that can, only progress in his work, he may find time to set up another TC as we used to know it but better and far more secure than of old. Just my own opinion, but the way things panned out, i feel it was only a matter of time before things turned to shit, but lets not forget this was beyond anyone's power to stop the site getting wiped, everyone involved had the site's best intentions at heart so , hindsight is a very fickle thing eh ??

Let's just watch this space and see what happens eh ? Very Happy  expect nothing, and we may well get a surprise, that's one of my motto's in life...
